More than 1,000 soldiers reinforced Gotland in Aurora 26’s final stage, testing how quickly Sweden and allied units can move from the mainland to the Baltic island.
The April 27-May 13 exercise brings together 18,000 troops, 12 allied nations and Ukraine in Sweden’s first Aurora drill as a fully integrated NATO member.
Allied forces added air-defense, logistics and infantry units, while Ukrainian drone teams contributed frontline expertise in drone warfare and counter-drone tactics.
Sweden said the drill validated its ability to move allied troops, vehicles and materiel across borders and support NATO collective defense in a worsening regional security environment.

The exercise is designed to test and strengthen NATO’s collective defense, with a special focus on the strategic Baltic Sea region and the defense of Gotland. Aurora 26 simulates a hybrid threat scenario, including the possibility of Russia attempting to seize territory on Gotland to challenge NATO’s response.
