At a Senate Appropriations hearing, FBI Director Kash Patel said he would take “any test” for alcohol problems if Sen. Chris Van Hollen took one too, escalating a sharp exchange over alleged misconduct.
Van Hollen cited an Atlantic report alleging excessive drinking, unexplained absences and an incident in which staff had to force entry into Patel’s home, arguing such behavior could impair Patel’s public duties.
Patel, who has sued The Atlantic and says he has never been drunk at work, shot back that Van Hollen was “slinging margaritas” with Kilmar Abrego Garcia during the senator’s El Salvador trip; Van Hollen denied anyone drank margaritas.
The confrontation widened beyond drinking claims, with Van Hollen also pointing to Patel’s recent firing of counterintelligence agents focused on Iran and subpoenas sent to reporters as broader leadership concerns.
