Roughly 12 current and former CIA officials have been interviewed as the FBI examines John Brennan’s role in the 2017 intelligence assessment on Russian election interference and whether he misled Congress in 2023.
Investigators are scrutinizing how the assessment concluded Russia sought to help Donald Trump and whether the Steele dossier improperly shaped that judgment despite Brennan’s testimony that the CIA was “not involved at all” with it.
Jim Jordan’s 2025 criminal referral helped drive the case, citing declassified CIA material that said Brennan backed including the dossier even after agency officials raised tradecraft concerns.
Brennan’s lawyer said he is a subject of the investigation, while Brennan has accused the Trump administration of “lawyer shopping” after the Justice Department replaced prosecutor Maria Medetis Long with Joe diGenova.
