Early May brought a key setback for Elon Musk’s AI push: Anthropic signed a deal to take all computing capacity at one of Musk’s main data centers.
Grok’s user momentum has stalled sharply, with AppMagic data showing downloads fell to about 8.3 million in April from more than 20 million in January.
Recon Analytics found just 0.174% of more than 260,000 U.S. AI users paid for Grok in Q2 2026, essentially unchanged from 0.173% a year earlier.
The weak uptake undercuts Musk’s late-2023 pledge to make Grok the world’s most popular AI, even after xAI tried engagement tactics such as a more provocative chatbot.
The result leaves Grok trailing ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini as Anthropic and OpenAI race to lock up scarce computing capacity.
