Google detailed a full Android Auto overhaul at its I/O edition show, adding YouTube playback at 60fps while parked, new widgets, Material 3 Expressive visuals and Immersive Maps.
The video feature switches to audio-only when the car moves, while Gemini adds in-car brainstorming, Magic Cue prompts from Messages and Calendar, and food ordering through services such as DoorDash.
Dolby Atmos support is also coming to Android Auto, with first rollout planned for cars from 11 brands including BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.
Cars with Google built-in get parallel upgrades: improved media apps, the same video-to-audio handoff, upgraded Maps, and Gemini features that can answer vehicle-specific questions such as warning lights or trunk fit.
