MIT Open Learning Launches 5-Course Universal AI Program as 88% of Organizations Adopt AI

MIT Open Learning has rolled out Universal AI on its MIT Learn platform, a self-paced online program designed to take non-technical learners from AI basics to practical, industry-specific use.
Five core courses cover programming, machine and deep learning, large language models, decision-making, explainability and ethics, with the first course offered free worldwide.
Six industry-focused courses are already available, including offerings in medicine, entrepreneurship and sustainability, while AskTIM—an AI assistant on MIT Learn—guides learners and tutors them through assignments.
MIT said the program responds to widening AI literacy gaps as more than half of U.S. adults use generative AI, 12% use it daily at work, and 88% of global organizations now use AI in at least one core function.
Universal AI, piloted since summer 2025 with universities, hospitals, companies and refugee learners, is the first product of MIT Open Learning's broader Universal Learning initiative.
