Since July 2024, Anand Ramanthan has worked at Meta after using six years at NASA and later roles at Capital One and Audible to pivot from physics into data science.
A 2011 physics Ph.D. taught him skepticism, verification and technical communication—skills he says now shape how he checks surprising results and briefs senior leaders.
Ramanthan said the hardest part was not the work itself but translating academic experience for employers, after even relatives urged him in 2012 to downplay the doctorate on his résumé.
His advice: do a science Ph.D. for genuine interest rather than a guaranteed payoff, then be ready to explain clearly how research skills transfer to corporate roles.
