Cardinal Peter Turkson attended Buddhist charity Tzu Chi's 60th-anniversary celebrations in Taiwan on May 10, marking a rare visit by a senior Vatican official.
The trip drew attention because the Vatican is Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in Europe and one of just 12 countries that still recognize Taipei.
Official exchanges remain limited: the Holy See has no ambassador based in Taipei even as it has worked in recent years to improve relations with Beijing.
