Mail-in voting began Monday ahead of California’s June 2 primary, with Republican Steve Hilton leading a crowded gubernatorial field and arguing Democratic rule has made the state unaffordable.
50% of voters in a recent CBS News poll said they want a candidate promising change, while 70% called California’s cost of living unmanageable and many rated the state economy badly.
Hilton has centered his campaign on taxes, regulation, schools and business flight, citing gasoline above $6 a gallon, the nation’s highest income taxes and weak student proficiency rates.
