Rod Stewart, 81, appeared to tell King Charles at a London charity event that the monarch had put “that little ratbag” Donald Trump “in his place” during last month’s U.S. visit.
The remark came at The King’s Trust 50th anniversary celebration, where Charles greeted celebrity guests; the king appeared to smile, and Stewart then praised his “wonderful performance in the Americas.”
Stewart’s jab referred to Charles’ state visit to America, where the king publicly stressed the U.S.-UK alliance, urged continued support for Ukraine and NATO, and met Trump at the White House.
The comment extends Stewart’s break with Trump: the singer, once friendly with his Florida neighbor, has recently attacked him over NATO, Afghanistan troop remarks and arms sales to Israel.
