IDF Prepares Wider Lebanon Ground Offensive as Hezbollah’s 100 FPV Drone Operators Pressure Israel
6 articles · Updated · Institute for the Study of War · May 12
Israeli ground forces are preparing for an expanded operation in Lebanon if political leaders approve it, with the move driven by Hezbollah’s persistent FPV drone attacks on Israeli targets.
Hezbollah’s drone threat has proved hard to suppress: Israeli military reporting says fewer than 10 of roughly 100 FPV operators have been killed, and the group recently damaged an Iron Dome battery near the border.
The IDF has already widened airstrikes over the past week into the Bekaa Valley and north of the Litani River, and a May 9 strike on a Hezbollah drone launch site was described as the start of a new offensive policy.
Those preparations come just before May 14-15 talks in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli officials, where Hezbollah disarmament, border issues and Israel’s withdrawal demands are expected to dominate.
The clash also fits a broader regional shift in drone warfare, with Iranian media claiming Tehran has supplied 10,000 FPV drones to its ground forces and analysts saying Iran likely shares the technology with Hezbollah.

Drone Warfare Escalation in the 2026 Israel-Hezbollah Conflict: Tactical Innovations, Humanitarian Crisis, and Global Security Implications
Overview
As of May 2026, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is rapidly intensifying, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) preparing for expanded ground operations while facing a growing drone threat. Hezbollah’s use of advanced fibre optic drones, inspired by tactics seen in Ukraine, has become a major concern for the IDF. These drones are designed to operate in heavily jammed electronic environments, making them difficult to counter. In response, the IDF is adopting new defensive methods, highlighting how evolving drone technology is reshaping battlefield strategies and escalating the stakes in this ongoing conflict.
