California’s American Innovation coin honoring Steve Jobs becomes available to the public on May 12 after Governor Gavin Newsom marked its release in Sacramento.
The $1 coin is California’s entry in the U.S. Mint program launched in 2018 to recognize innovators and breakthroughs from every state, territory and Washington, D.C.
Newsom chose Jobs for his role in reshaping personal computing, mobile technology and digital storytelling through Apple products including the Macintosh, iPhone and iPad, as well as Pixar’s “Toy Story.”
The design shows a young Jobs seated before Northern California oak-covered hills, reflecting the landscape that the Steve Jobs Archive said helped shape his vision.
