NASA Overhauls Lunar Lander Plan for 21 Moon Touchdowns After 3 of 4 US Attempts Faltered

  • 21 lunar surface missions in the next 2½ years are now central to NASA’s moon-base push, forcing changes in how the agency buys landers and manages suppliers after repeated landing setbacks.
  • 3 of the last 4 U.S. lunar landing attempts fell short, and NASA also needs tighter oversight of its industrial base and a supply chain that has repeatedly missed delivery schedules.
  • 13 CLPS missions have been contracted since 2019, but only 4 have launched and just 1 achieved a fully successful landing, underscoring the gap between NASA’s ambitions and current execution.
  • 4 more commercial landers are being built for launches in the second half of 2026, though delays could push some into 2027 as NASA shifts toward a lunar surface outpost over a moon-orbiting station.
With a 75% failure rate, can NASA’s high-risk commercial strategy really establish a Moon base on time?

Artemis Rebooted: NASA Adds 2027 Test Flight, Targets Yearly Moon Landings and a $30B Lunar Base by 2036

Overview

NASA has announced a major overhaul of its Artemis lunar exploration program, led by Administrator Jared Isaacman. Recognizing that the previous plan to land astronauts on the Moon by 2028 was unrealistic without proper preparation, NASA is now taking a more deliberate and safety-driven approach. A new mission in 2027 will allow astronauts to dock with commercial moon landers in low-Earth orbit, validating key procedures and technologies before attempting a lunar landing. Alongside this, NASA is increasing the frequency of Artemis missions, standardizing vehicle configurations, and aiming for at least one surface landing each year to ensure a sustainable and successful return to the Moon.
