Scott Boras said Tarik Skubal's rehab could be far shorter than the usual two-to-three months after the Tigers ace had loose bodies removed from his elbow last week.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache used a NanoScope procedure that Boras described as minimally invasive — "almost like receiving a shot" — meaning Skubal may not need to rebuild arm strength from scratch.
Skubal, 29, was 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts before the injury and is headed into free agency after winning the last two AL Cy Young Awards.
Detroit is 19-22 and 1.5 games back in the AL Central while its rotation remains strained: Justin Verlander just moved to the 60-day IL, Reese Olson is out for the year and Casey Mize could return this month.
Is Skubal's rapid recovery a medical miracle or a risky gamble on his massive upcoming free agent contract?
Will the revolutionary 'Skubal scope' change sports medicine or create a dangerous precedent for rushing athletes back to the field?
