Wei Fenghe, 72, and Li Shangfu, 68, received death sentences with a two-year reprieve on May 7 after military-court graft convictions, one of the harshest penalties imposed on senior Chinese officers in years.
Xinhua said Wei was convicted of taking bribes, while Li was found guilty of both taking and offering bribes; both also lost political rights for life and forfeited all personal property.
Under Chinese law, the sentences are expected to be commuted after two years to life imprisonment without parole or further commutation, underscoring the severity of the case.
Both men were former defense ministers, state councillors and Central Military Commission members who also led the PLA Rocket Force, the branch overseeing China’s nuclear arsenal and missile systems.
The punishments mark an escalation in Xi Jinping’s military anti-corruption purge, which intensified in 2023 and has raised concerns that repeated removals could disrupt command and readiness.
