$135,000-plus in Nebraska Democratic Party spending has gone to mail and phone calls for Cindy Burbank ahead of Tuesday’s Senate primary, even though she says she would drop out if she wins.
The push is aimed at stopping anti-abortion pastor Bill Forbes from taking the Democratic nomination and siphoning votes from independent Dan Osborn in November against Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts.
Party leaders have cast Forbes as a possible Ricketts plant — an allegation his campaign denies — while Democratic-aligned Common Defense Action Fund has also mailed for Burbank.
The primary has already been unusually chaotic: Burbank sued to regain ballot access in March after being removed, and she also paid the filing fee for a Legal Marijuana NOW candidate in another race that could affect November.
