The 18-year-old Chicago resident died in Durango, Mexico, on Sunday, a day after his parents were released from US immigration custody in Arizona.
His aunt and brother confirmed the death after the family’s reunion on Saturday, following an immigration judge’s expedited release order so his parents could travel to him.
Gonzalez, a US citizen, had terminal colon cancer that spread to his stomach and lungs; the Mexican consulate, lawmakers and community advocates had pushed for the reunion.
