In a Thursday More Perfect Union podcast interview, the Maine Democratic Senate candidate said billionaires wield too much power and are effectively running the country instead of President Donald Trump.
Platner argued past efforts hit the middle class because politicians avoid upsetting major donors, and said an ex-IRS agent roommate told him budget cuts push enforcement toward small and medium-sized businesses.
He also cited hundreds of billions of dollars in uncollected corporate taxes. The remarks come as progressive politicians including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson promote higher taxes on the wealthy.
