In his first public comments, the 76-year-old said Katherine, 42, died by suicide in February at her Hollywood Hills home, and called it a nightmare for the family.
Short said Katherine had long battled extreme mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder, and compared suicide to the terminal stage of disease, as with wife Nancy Dolman's ovarian cancer.
He said he wants mental health and suicide discussed without shame ahead of his Netflix documentary Marty, Life Is Short, which premieres on 12 May.
