The swarm struck the Imperial Valley city over the past day, with about 40 quakes of magnitude 2.0 or higher and the first jolts beginning Saturday afternoon.
No injuries or significant damage were reported, but a ShakeAlert was issued after the strongest quake hit shortly after midnight Sunday and aftershocks continued into the morning.
Officials said they were monitoring activity around the Brawley Fault Zone, a seismically active link between the Imperial and San Andreas faults where earthquake swarms are common.
Is this earthquake swarm relieving seismic pressure, or is it a final warning before a catastrophic rupture on the San Andreas fault?
The ShakeAlert system worked. With new federal funding, how will this technology change earthquake safety across the American West?
Scientists say swarms are driven by deep fluid movements. What does this mysterious process reveal about California's future seismic hazards?
