Governor Gretchen Whitmer acted hours after the 42-inch main ruptured around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in River Woods Park, affecting Auburn Hills, Orion Township, Lake Orion and Rochester Hills.
Great Lakes Water Authority said a leak detected last week led to the break after valves in neighbouring townships were closed so crews could work on the line.
