Emergency services were called to Church Lane, Selston, Nottinghamshire, at 19:18 BST on Saturday, and police said the 91-year-old's body was later found in the wreckage.
Nearby residents were evacuated, road closures were imposed and fire crews from Ashfield, Alfreton, Eastwood and Ripley brought the blaze under control by about 21:50.
Police and fire investigators are examining the cause, with officers saying there is no wider public threat; tributes described Poole, a former garage owner and autograss racer, as a true gentleman.
