The former middleweight champion made the remark on Wednesday before Saturday's UFC 328 main event against unbeaten champion Khamzat Chimaev at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Chimaev is 15-0 and has won six professional fights by submission, using wrestling to finish opponents including Kevin Holland and Robert Whittaker.
Strickland, 30-7, said he avoids positions that invite submissions; even after six takedowns in his UFC 297 loss to Dricus Du Plessis, no submission attempt materialised.
