US petrol averaged $4.52 a gallon on Sunday, up from $2.98 in late February, with some drivers paying above $5 and spending more than $1,000 a month on fuel.
The surge is pushing some workers to retire, switch jobs, limit job searches to shorter distances or seek extra work-from-home days, while delivery drivers say earnings have been squeezed by higher costs.
Indeed says the share of job seekers looking within 30 miles rose to 59.2% in April, while Stanford research found home-working days edged up to 26.2%, though broad policy shifts remain unlikely.
