In laboratory tests on 32 uropathogenic E. coli strains, the combination improved antibacterial activity in 25 and cut spontaneous resistance by up to five orders of magnitude.
The study, published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, found the strongest effect with fosfomycin among several common UTI antibiotics tested, including nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin and cephalexin.
Researchers said the findings suggest natural dietary compounds could help tackle rising antimicrobial resistance, but cautioned the results are laboratory-based and do not yet show drinking cranberry juice improves treatment in people.
