The 73-year-old Devon music teacher bought the century-old village pub in Knowle, Budleigh Salterton, after it sold in 2023 for about $368,000.
Manfield said losing the pub, a meeting place since at least World War Two, would have been catastrophic for a village with little else beyond its hall.
He is restoring original features and working with landlord Mark Loftin, who took over in February 2024, as locals praise preserving a traditional community hub.
