The 32-year-old former middleweight champion told Dana White in the Octagon he does not want to fight at 185 pounds again after losing a split decision to Sean Strickland.
White said he had the bout level at 2-2 entering the final round and linked the move to Chimaev's difficult weight cut, which was evident at Friday's official weigh-in.
The defeat was Chimaev's first career loss after a run from welterweight to the middleweight title, while Strickland became only the division's second two-time champion.
