Patriarch Bartholomew I said in Athens that the Istanbul-based school, closed for more than 50 years, would reopen after major renovation works are completed.
The seminary’s return would mark a significant step for Turkey’s Greek Orthodox community and address a longstanding issue raised repeatedly by the United States and European Union.
The Turkish government declined to comment on the report, which said an inauguration ceremony is expected in September if the building complex is finished on schedule.
