At UFC 328 in Newark, New Jersey, two judges scored it 48-47 for Strickland and one 48-47 for Chimaev in a controversial split decision.
Strickland out-landed Chimaev 160-137, especially to the head, while defending four of 13 takedown attempts from the previously unbeaten favourite.
Elsewhere, Joshua Van retained the flyweight title by fifth-round TKO over Tatsuro Taira, while Alexander Volkov, Sean Brady and King Green also won on the main card.
