Qatar's defence ministry said the Abu Dhabi-bound ship was hit on Sunday morning, a fire was quickly extinguished and it continued to Mesaieed Port with no injuries reported.
The ministry's statement confirmed an earlier UKMTO report and added the vessel's onward voyage, sharpening concern over shipping security near the Strait of Hormuz.
The strike came as Iran threatened vessels complying with US sanctions and Qatar attempted a rare fuel shipment through Hormuz during a blockade that has driven oil prices sharply higher.
