The Cell Metabolism study found hormone-sensitive lipase, long known for breaking down stored fat for energy, also has a previously hidden nuclear role in adipose cells.
Researchers said the mechanism helps preserve normal fat-cell biology, pointing to obesity treatments that target tissue function as well as fat reduction and metabolic health.
The finding could broaden thinking on obesity beyond weight loss alone, though the report says any more targeted therapies would come only eventually.
Is manipulating this hidden fat cell switch the missing piece for a true and lasting obesity cure?
Could fixing fat cells, not just shrinking them, be the ultimate key to conquering the global obesity crisis?
