The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office ended the search on Saturday at Paul Flores's mother's Arroyo Grande property, about 15 miles south of San Luis Obispo.
Investigators said earlier soil testing indicating possible human remains proved inaccurate, though detectives will review evidence collected during the search.
Smart, a 19-year-old California Polytechnic State University student, disappeared in 1996; Flores was arrested in 2021 and convicted of her murder in 2022, but her remains have not been found.
