A forecast for the School Construction Authority says enrollment will fall to 721,251, with Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx seeing the biggest drops.
The report links the decline to falling birthrates, an aging population and residents leaving the city, after traditional public school enrollment fell to 884,400 this year.
That follows a loss of more than 117,000 students since 2019-20 and a Citizens Budget Commission finding that New York City lost about 114,000 more domestic residents than it gained in 2025.
