San Francisco officials consider ban on smoking in outdoor bar patios

The proposal, covering patios and parklets, goes to a committee on 18 May and could reach the Board of Supervisors next month, taking effect early next year if approved.
Supervisor Myrna Melgar and Dr John Maa back the measure, saying it would protect patrons, workers and passersby from secondhand smoke and align bars and taverns with restaurant smoking rules.
Bar owners and some patrons oppose the plan, warning of lost business and difficult enforcement, while city officials say they would emphasise outreach and provide free signs rather than punitive action.
