It won 40 Lewisham seats, overturning Labour control there for the first time since 1968, and gained 27 seats in Lambeth, where Labour lost power for the first time since 2006.
Across England, the Greens gained more than 440 councillors and won first-ever elected mayors in Hackney and Lewisham, while also taking Norwich and Hastings from Labour or no overall control.
Labour held on in Hackney and Islington despite Green advances, and the party also made gains in Manchester, Salford, Oxford, Southampton and Exeter.
