The shooting happened around 9:40pm at an East 27th Street Court complex after a caller reported an armed man claiming to hold a hostage on the second floor.
Police said officers found the man holding a gun out a window, gave repeated commands, then one officer fired when he did not comply; the man died at the scene.
Officers secured the apartment and gave aid until emergency crews arrived. The officer was placed on administrative leave, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry.
