A Washington State Department of Agriculture grain inspector found and photographed the insect on 30 April, then state and federal staff searched the vessel and nearby area on 1 May.
Officials destroyed the hornet and found no others, but say it remains unclear whether any escaped the ship or whether nests are already established around Vancouver.
