San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said soil tests at a home in Arroyo Grande occupied by Paul Flores's mother indicated compounds linked to a decomposing body.
Authorities executed a court-approved search warrant on East Branch Street and said Smart's remains have not been recovered, though they believe remains were once there or may still be.
Flores, 49, was convicted in 2022 of murdering Smart, a 19-year-old Cal Poly student who vanished in 1996, and officials say they remain committed to finding her body.
