The May 1 grounding of its all-Airbus fleet is releasing A320neo jets and RTX Pratt & Whitney GTF engines into the US market, with some near-new aircraft already being dismantled.
Executives and analysts said removed GTF engines are being leased to support grounded aircraft, offering limited temporary relief in a market hit by inspection backlogs and earlier manufacturing problems.
Spirit had 114 A320-family aircraft in May, including 66 leased; court filings show 17 lessor-owned GTF engines and about 30 lessor-owned GTF-powered planes, though many assets may take months to reach buyers.
