On the third day without a town police force, deputies in Cohutta, Georgia, took custody of evidence tied to active court cases after officers were dismissed on Wednesday.
Sheriff Darren Pierce said the county can handle policing long term because it already patrols the area, while discussing with prosecutors how the shutdown could affect recent cases.
County attorney Bryan Rayburn said Cohutta's charter requires the mayor to give 30 days' notice and consult the council before firing employees, steps he said were not followed.
