The blaze began around 12:51 p.m. at PBF Energy's 197,000-barrel-per-day Chalmette, Louisiana, refinery outside New Orleans, with all workers reported safe and accounted for.
PBF said refinery personnel responded quickly, fence-line monitoring found no off-site impact, and St. Bernard Parish fire and sheriff's officials were assisting at the scene.
Earlier reports described an explosion, heavy smoke and road closures near the refinery, which processes light and heavy crude; PBF said the cause will be investigated and agencies notified.
