In Rome after meeting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Rubio ended a two-day trip aimed at repairing ties after tensions involving Pope Leo XIV and Donald Trump.
He said President Trump's view that Iran is a threat remains unchanged, while insisting Washington can still work cooperatively with the Vatican and the global Catholic Church.
Earlier on Friday, Rubio also warned Iranian vessels against threatening US ships, as Washington awaited Tehran's response on a proposed memorandum to end the war.
