Police found the 69-year-old unconscious shortly after 8am on Thursday in Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture, after she went missing while picking wild plants the previous day.
She had face and head injuries that appeared to have been caused by an animal's claws, and police are investigating whether a bear was responsible.
Local hunters are due to patrol the area on Friday. Earlier this year, Japan confirmed another fatal bear attack in Iwate amid rising encounters nationwide.
