The case centres on allegations, backed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and personal injury lawyers, that Merck used “disease mongering” to drive sales of the HPV vaccine.
Gardasil is used to prevent human papillomavirus infections, a sexually transmitted virus linked to cervical and other cancers, and mainstream medicine has long regarded the vaccine as safe and effective.
Approved in about 150 countries since its launch 20 years ago, Gardasil has seen more than 900 million doses distributed worldwide, according to Merck.
