Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen said the signs, approved 4-1 in November and erected last week near City Hall, cover part of All American Way in Westminster, California.
The redesignation leaves official street names and addresses unchanged, but some liberal residents denounced Kirk as hateful while Nguyen said the tribute recognises free speech, patriotism and Christian values.
Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee and congressional candidate, linked the decision to Westminster’s large Vietnamese American community, saying many residents value free speech because their families fled communism.
