In the Season 22 finale on 7 May, Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman leave Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for Paris after McKidd's 18-year run.
The 52-year-old Scottish actor, who joined in 2008, said he wants to pursue theatre, an ITV thriller and his UK production company, Ferryman Films.
McKidd, who has directed 49 episodes, said he may return to direct again, while reflecting on Owen's divisive storylines and paying tribute to late co-star Eric Dane.
