NOAA said the aurora would be visible from 10pm to 2am across Alaska, northern Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The display is driven by a fast-moving solar wind stream, with active conditions and isolated G1 to G2 geomagnetic storm periods improving viewing chances under clear, dark skies.
Experts said sightings are best away from city lights while facing north, and photographers can use tripods, wide-angle lenses and long exposures to capture the shifting colours.
