The switch takes effect on 22 May, after Colbert's finale, with Allen's Funny You Should Ask also joining CBS's late-night lineup.
Colbert told The Hollywood Reporter he congratulated Allen and said CBS's move surprised him because the network had sought a new five-year contract 18 months earlier.
