The 21-year-old outfielder hurt his right wrist in his first at-bat Monday in Detroit and was examined in Boston by hand specialist Dr Matthew Leibman.
Interim manager Chad Tracy said Anthony had not progressed enough to avoid the move before a four-game Rays series at Fenway Park, and Mickey Gasper was recalled from Triple-A Worcester.
Anthony, who signed an eight-year, $130m rookie deal last year, is batting .229 with one homer and hopes to return after the minimum stint; he also missed time last September with an oblique strain.
