Trainor, 30, was killed early Wednesday when 50-year-old Hernan Marrero, driving the wrong way on Route 1 in Lynnfield, hit his unmarked SUV head-on.
State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble said Trainor's shift had ended when he responded to a 911 call about the southbound driver travelling in northbound lanes, actions Noble said saved other motorists.
Family, fellow troopers and community members continued paying respects at the Danvers barracks on Thursday, while funeral arrangements were pending and investigators still sought the reason for Marrero's wrong-way driving.
